A Raccoon Damaged Industrial Portable, Wildlife Exclusion Set Up
Posted by Jared Houliston Tuesday, March 18th, 2025 | 3,498 Reads
A typical day at an industrial complex in Brantford turned problematic when workers discovered a determined raccoon had wreaked havoc on one of their portables.
The portable building was compromised after a raccoon tore open parts of the underside which exposed the flooring materials and created an entry point into the subfloor of the structure.
When the workers spotted the debris and insulation scattered everywhere, they realized that a form of wildlife was the cause, and that something needed to be done so it doesn’t happen again. Here’s an example of roof vent damage that was caused by a raccoon in Hamilton.
So, with Jared’s assistance, it was determined that the intruder was a raccoon, which are known for their persistence in gaining entry into structures to find shelter and food.
The damage was quite extensive, but the team got to work quickly after the completed inspection, by setting up exclusion, which hinder the raccoon and other forms of wildlife from getting back in.
By following humane raccoon removal protocols, the raccoon will be able to leave on it’s own and ensure there will be no risk to the workers or the animal itself.
Watch the video to see the extent of the damage, and the prevention/exclusion methods that were put in place to hinder the raccoon (or other wild animals) from returning to the portables:
This incident highlights the importance of businesses integrating wildlife exclusion and pest management practices into their operational budgets, especially in commercial and industrial settings. Wildlife intrusions generally do significantly disrupt business operations, they cause downtime and they create unforeseen expenses.
Why Preemptive Wildlife Exclusion Works
Professional wildlife exclusion works by installing strong physical barriers and preventative measures that animals cannot bypass, thus effectively protecting the property from wildlife intrusions.
When installed correctly, exclusion methods ensure that wildlife like raccoons, squirrels, mice, skunks and opossums cannot gain entry in the first place and cause costly damages.
Both residential and business owners will always be susceptible to intrusions until prevention is applied.
That is a key reason why we advise that you don’t wait until the damage is done to get exclusion measures installed, because if the wildlife gets into your property beforehand, it will probably end up doubling the cost.
Wildlife exclusion services typically include:
- Installation of industrial-strength metal fencing and wire mesh.
- Specialized caulking to seal small gaps and entry points.
- Protection of chimneys, roof vents, and ventilation systems.
- Securing openings around commercial HVAC and industrial air handling units.
- Reinforcing vulnerable building foundations and entry points around loading docks.
- Sealing gaps and entryways beneath decks, porches, or storage containers.
- Strengthening eavestroughs, soffit intersections, hydro fittings, and other external structural elements.
These are proactive measures that secure the property, and significantly reduces the likelihood of future wildlife damage while protecting your assets, and ensuring long-term peace of mind.
How Wildlife Intrusions Affect Businesses
Commercial and industrial facilities can face significant risks from wildlife intrusions.
These incidents can and usually do:
- Cause substantial property damage, including compromised structures and insulation.
- Increase health and safety risks to employees due to possible encounters with wildlife.
- Lead to costly repairs, operational downtime, and negative impacts on productivity.
- Result in potential contamination or damage to stored materials and equipment.
- Create a public relations challenge, affecting the company’s professional image.
- Attract further wildlife if initial problems are not quickly addressed.
- Trigger compliance violations, particularly in sectors where strict sanitary and safety standards are enforced.
- Disrupt workflow and employee routines, necessitating temporary relocation or adjustments in work shifts.
- Increase insurance premiums due to higher risk assessments and recurring damage claims.
- Compromise data integrity and security by damaging technological infrastructure like cabling and wiring.
The most informative business decision is including wildlife management in annual operational budgets to help avoid many of these problems from occuring.
Preventative measures are more cost-effective and more easily manageable compared to addressing issues after the fact, especially when considering repairs, downtime, and operation disruption will be the result.
